Bourbon Explore WV Spirits Uncategorized

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer—and there’s no better place to launch your adventures than Pendleton County, West Virginia. Whether you’re into mountain views, river time, or just sipping something delicious with a view, this itinerary brings together the best of the region—with Swilled Dog as your home base.

Bourbon Flights and Backyard Feels

Our tasting room is equal parts high-end and laid-back. You can sip a cider flight with friends, try something bold from our whiskey collection, or grab a cocktail from our seasonal menu and head outside. We’ve got lawn games, a mountain view, and tables built for connection. It’s the kind of spot where strangers become neighbors and time feels different.

FRIDAY: Hike, Chill, and Sip

Fuel up for the weekend with a stop at Yokum’s Store, where you can grab road trip snacks, trail essentials, and a six-pack of Swilled Dog cider for later. If you’re feeling up for it, they also offer guided horseback rides—a scenic and low-key way to explore the Seneca Rocks area.

Next, hit the trail to Seneca Rocks, one of the most iconic vistas in West Virginia. The observation deck can be reached in under an hour and delivers jaw-dropping views.

After your outdoor fix, head over to Swilled Dog in Upper Tract. RVing? We’re a Harvest Hosts location, so you can park and stay the night under the stars. Not camping? No problem—there are plenty of nearby cabins and cozy rentals, and showing your lodging confirmation earns you 10% off your Swilled Dog tab (excluding spirits).

SATURDAY: Adventure Hard, Relax Harder

Ease into the day with a short drive to Franklin. Grab a coffee from Elevated grounds, then browse the Pendleton County Farmers Market.

Then, head over to NRocks Via Ferrata for a fun adventure that includes rock climbing or zip lining. This guided climb includes ladder rungs, a massive suspension bridge, and unbeatable views. No experience needed—just a sense of adventure.

After conquering these stunning views, head back to Swilled Dog for a well-earned whiskey tasting.

Need a souvenir? Take home a bottle of your favorite spirit, a growler of cider, or something from our merch wall.

In the evening, continue the local fun with a picnic by the river at Smoke Hole. Swing by Shreve’s Country Store to catch live music by Raw Country from 7-9pm for an authentic slice of small-town music culture you won’t want to miss.

SUNDAY: Caverns + Casual Exploring

Spend the morning underground with a tour of Smoke Hole Caverns. The guided experience walks you through ancient limestone formations, sparkling crystal walls, and deep Appalachian folklore.

Once you’ve explored beneath the surface, it’s time to stretch your legs above ground with a hike on the North Fork Mountain Trail. Known for its sweeping views and dramatic ridgeline, this trail offers some of the best vistas in the state—especially the section leading to Chimney Top, where panoramic views of Seneca Rocks and the South Branch Potomac River make the effort more than worth it. Whether you opt for a short scenic trek or tackle a longer stretch, the North Fork Trail is a local favorite for a reason.

MONDAY: Until Next Time

As your weekend winds down, pack up your gear, wave goodbye to the mountains, and carry a little piece of Pendleton County home with you—whether it's a bottle of bourbon or just the lingering sense of calm that only a weekend in wild West Virginia can bring.
