Advocating for the Industry: Brooke’s Trip to the DISCUS Annual Conference & Fly-In
Recently, Swilled Dog’s own Brooke took to Washington, D.C., for the annual Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) Annual Conference and Fly-In—a key event for the spirits industry. The conference provided an incredible opportunity to engage with industry leaders, discuss pressing legislative matters, and, of course, sample some of the finest spirits from distillers across the country. But beyond the networking and tastings, this trip was about something bigger—advocating for the future of craft distilling.
Learning, Networking, and Taking Action
The conference kicked off with an insightful session on control states and marketing, followed by a networking reception that set the stage for meaningful conversations. Day two included a general session before the highly anticipated Fly-In Hill Climb, where Brooke joined fellow industry professionals to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Their mission? To discuss key issues affecting the distilled spirits industry, including tariffs, taxes, and dietary guidelines.

Brooke had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the offices of Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Congresswoman Carol Miller, Senator Jim Justice, Senator Harley, and Representative Ann Wagner from Missouri. Each of these offices was receptive to the discussions, taking the time to understand the impact of common-sense legislation on craft distilleries like Swilled Dog. Advocating for fair policies that support the growth of the industry is critical—not just for distilleries, but for the broader economy.
Brooke even caught a brief moment to chat about basketball with Senator Jim Justice in passing as he was heading to a vote. Of course, she got to meet Baby Dog as well, another iconic West Virginia dog, just like Lucy Pickles.
The Importance of Advocacy
Reflecting on the experience, Brooke shared: “The DISCUS conference is an amazing opportunity to network, learn, and, of course, taste amazing spirits from some of the best distillers in the world. This year was no different. On top of that, I had the opportunity to be a part of our Fly-In to help educate our lawmakers and advocate for our industry. Our WV lawmakers were so gracious and really took the time to understand how they can help our industry and, in turn, the U.S. economy.”
The conference continued with a visit to the DISCUS offices for a rooftop reception attended by various legislative offices, providing another chance to strengthen relationships and push for meaningful change in the industry. Brooke then rounded out her trip by participating in a Craft Advisory Council lunch, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of craft distilling.
A Fun Surprise
Beyond the serious discussions, there was a special highlight—meeting Baby Dog, the beloved bulldog of Governor Jim Justice! As Brooke noted, “And, hello, Baby Dog! What a sweetheart! Lucy will have to meet her next time.”
Looking Ahead
Brooke’s participation in the DISCUS Annual Conference and Fly-In is a testament to Swilled Dog’s commitment to not just crafting exceptional spirits, but also shaping the future of the industry. Advocacy, education, and collaboration are crucial in ensuring that distillers—large and small—continue to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.

Swilled Dog will continue to champion these efforts, ensuring that the voices of craft distillers are heard. After all, great bourbon starts with great policies.
Stay tuned for more updates from the world of spirits, and as always, cheers to great whiskey and even greater industry progress!
